I’ve never learned to like the bitter taste of coffee. I love the smell, but the taste, um, not so much. I mean, every once in a while, I’ll have a little coffee with my cream and sugar.
Until. Until our latest adventure in Puerto Rico. My son and daughter-in-law took us to breakfast one morning, and my DIL ordered a mocha—a cup dipped in Nutella and then plunged into Oreo cookie crumbs. The beautiful chocolatey mug was then filled with mocha, and a creamy heart was painted on top.

And so, when Dan and I returned home from Puerto Rico, we added Nutella and Oreos to our grocery list. My husband was gracious enough to take care of the frosting in between the Oreo sandwiches (thank you, Dan). I crumbled the cookies, dipped and plunged mugs, and constructed the coffee/chocolate component. (I failed at crafting the creamy heart on top, but I think it’s because we don’t have a foamer thingie.)
Mocha—rimmed in Nutella and Oreo cookie crumbs—my fav new, (overly-sweet), pure, unadulterated coffee beverage!

My homemade version—not as artistic, but still … a pink mug
For the record, there was quite a long period when my diet consisted mainly of fresh veggies and legumes, fish and poultry, whole grains, and healthy fats and sugars (read: olive oil, avocados, honey, molasses, pure maple syrup).
And then, in the year leading up to COVID, I met Dan. He and I became our own little bubble—mostly hiking and snowshoeing and baking and cooking. Since I had someone to bake for who loves sweet things, I didn’t waste any time pulling out the baking pans and cookie sheets.
And of course, while Dan is sampling cobblers, and pumpkin/ banana/ zucchini breads, and cookies, I may have eaten them, as well. And now I like sweets too much. (Did you see how I did that—how I blamed it on Dan?)
When I was on staff at St. Charles Cancer Center, the registered dietician had a general guideline about eating not-so-healthy foods. “All things in moderation,” she said. Which means, go ahead and have a cupcake at your kid’s birthday party, and enjoy that slice of pizza after the basketball game. But eat mostly healthful foods.
All things in moderation vs. indulgence. For more healthful living. And better quality of life.
When it comes to the Nutella-and-cookie-crumb-dipped mocha, moderation for Dan and me means maybe once a month, or twice a year, say, on Valentine’s Day and Christmas.
All this has inspired a goal on our part to go a full month without eating processed-sugar-things, beginning as soon as we polish off the German Chocolate cake I made for Dan’s birthday.
The idea is to see how we feel after the month, and then to include processed sugars back into our eating habits, but in moderation.
Now, if we can just get Dan’s friend, Al, on board … (if you’re Al, you know what that means).
Cheree Davis
Oh dear, does this mean I shouldn’t offer Dan monster cookies when he comes to volunteer at camp? You know his slogan is ‘will work for cookies’! Or perhaps we’ll go with ‘what happens at camp stays at camp’?!
Marlys Lawry
That’s exactly what that means, Cheree! Don’t give in to the “will work for cookies” puppy dog eyes. He’s good with the pouty lower lip and the puppy dog eyes. 😉
Yvonne
Smile. Totally identify! 🙂
Marlys Lawry
Right, Yvonne?!
One of the flock of Al's you know
I’ll help with the “no sugar” month! Just have Dan drop all that goodness off at our joint. We are here to serve the Lawry’s…anytime…anyhow.
Marlys Lawry
You’re such a good friend—so sacrificial on Dan’s behalf! I know he’ll appreciate it.
Dorene Foster
Marlys, lots of luck as far as Al is concerned! Ha!!
Marlys Lawry
Yeah, Dorene … I suspect you know who Al is … sigh.

Simply lovely and sweet (wink-wink).
My heart is bursting with joy for you and Dan. Two special people who found one another and are living life to its fullest. Walking in our Father’s will is simply THE BEST! Hugs!
Marlys Lawry
Yes, the BEST! So kind of you, Kathy. Thank you!

I think you and I inherited a dislike for acidic coffee. However, I do like coffee, just with a little baking soda to neutralize the acid. It doesn’t take 100% of the acid out, but it’s enough to make a good cup of coffee, with a little milk and sugar added to sweeten the brew.
Marlys Lawry
Hmmm, Mike … you mentioned a little milk and sugar to sweeten the brew. I usually go with a little coffee to add some “coffee flavor” to my cream and sugar. So maybe we don’t share an inheritance after all 😉

Can you really have too much of a good thing… good on you folks, thanks Marlys, you’ve got to do what you got to do & enjoy 😊. I suppose it’s OK to have an idea, and try it…. So it was, how would I have that smoked salmon?, I can please myself and it won’t hurt anyone. You might not like this!!!. A fresh slice of brown bread, a very light smear of marmalade, slices of the smoked salmon laid on top, some black pepper, then some cream cheese, or poached, or scrambled egg, together with king prawn Marie. I really don’t care that my idea may not appeal… I enjoy this luxury now and again… sometimes accompanied by glass of wine. Bless you folks… I hope I got a smile from you!. Love, Peter.
Marlys Lawry
Definitely got a smile from me, Peter. And actually, your concoction sounds like something I’d want to try!
